Imagine a picturesque scene: pristine white structures with domed roofs, gracefully descending towards the shimmering azure waters. The visual is instantly recognizable—the iconic holiday haven of Santorini, Greece. However, there's a subtle difference in the air. It might be the warmer, desert-like breeze or the Arabic script adorning the signs. These subtle clues hint at the actual locale of this idyllic retreat: Abu Dhabi, within the United Arab Emirates. Debuting in February, the Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat is nestled an hour's drive from the city's bustling downtown. The resort's concept is a homage to the celebrated Greek isle, with its interior and exterior design dominated by hues of white, beige, and blue, accentuated by arched passageways and entrances. Custom artwork, atmospheric music, and intricate linen embroidery all contribute to the illusion of a Mediterranean escape. Yet, beyond the elaborate aesthetics, Rachid Bakas, the retreat's general manager, believes it's Abu Dhabi's natural splendor that truly bridges the gap between the two locales. "Observe the sea's color beside us, and the concept falls into place," Bakas remarks. "The essence of Santorini resonates perfectly here, which is what makes this design flawless."
Luxury replicas are not typically associated with opulence. However, Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi might just be the exception to this rule. The starting price for its most modest accommodation is around $800 per night, which is twice the average rate for hotels in Santorini, Greece, during peak season, as per Tripadvisor. If cost is not a selling point, what would compel a traveler to opt for Abu Dhabi over a direct flight to Greece? "It's about exclusivity," Bakas explains. "This place offers intimacy and seclusion. It's a sanctuary—a commodity that might be scarce in Santorini, especially during the summer months when it's crowded and bustling."
Architecturally, the retreat is composed of 22 rooms, catering to a maximum of 44 guests at any given time. Each room opens into a communal living area, intentionally fostering a cozy ambiance while encouraging guests to explore the various spaces within the facility. "The element of surprise is inherent within the hotel," Bakas says. "From the moment you step in, you continue to uncover delightful nooks and areas."
Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi provides an array of experiences, including a cigar lounge, a cinema, a spa, and yoga sessions by the pool or beach. However, the primary aim is not just entertainment but to allow guests to revel in peace and serenity. "Sometimes, people simply desire solitude; they don't wish to be constantly engaged in activities, and that's the equilibrium we provide," the manager elaborates.
Adding to the tranquility is a unique policy regarding age. The minimum age for check-in is 18, even for those accompanied by parents or guardians. "You can truly relax and feel a world away," Bakas says. "It wasn't an easy decision, but we aimed to set ourselves apart from other resorts in the region."
While striving to make a lasting impression on their guests, the hotel staff also diligently work to erase certain traces. The white walls are meticulously maintained, with a dedicated team in charge of this task. "We employ two painters on-site, and their daily task is to inspect and perform touch-ups," Bakas reveals. These painters move through the rooms between guest departures and arrivals, ensuring that the surroundings remain true to their intended colors—white, and not any shade of gray, beige, or eggshell. "After the touch-ups, it's crucial to maintain uniformity in color, ensuring that guests don't notice any disparities in the strokes. It's indeed a significant aspect of our preventive maintenance," Bakas muses, his gaze affectionately sweeping over the walls and ceilings.
